Lower School

Year 7

Students will experience Dance by being involved in a short ‘taster‘ course in their first year at Lumen Christi. This course runs for a term and students will have dance once a week. 

Students are introduced to the elements of dance, learn safe dance practices, jazz and hip hop dance and performance techniques. The students will learn the above through participating in creative workshops and technique classes. Students will learn theatre etiquette and performance skills through performing for an audience.

This is a great course to get students to feel comfortable in making new friends,  group work and  performing in front of their peers.

Year 8

In Year 8, students select to study Dance as an elective. Students that enrol in Dance in Year 8 will have class once a week for a semester.

Students are introduced to the elements and structure  of a dance warm up and participate in jazz and hip hop  dance classes. Students will learn theatre etiquette and performance skills through performing for an audience.

Year 8 Dance students are required to complete practical tasks throughout the semester. To assist students with these tasks, they will be have the opportunity to be involved in a student Choreography Evening . This provides students with an opportunity to perform a class dance item and  their group choreography item for an audience.

Year 9

Year 9's students who elect to enrol in Dance will have class twice a week and it runs the whole year.

The Year 9 Dance course allows students to gain an understanding of the physical competencies specific to dance, including experiential anatomy, strength, flexibility, coordination and rhythmic understanding. This is developed through the teachings of specific warm ups, centre work and dance sequences. Students also are involved in the creative process working together as a team to create their own groups of movements. Students study the genre’s and styles of Jazz and Lyrical Dance.

Year 9 Dance students are required to complete practical tasks throughout the semester. To assist students with these tasks, they will be have the opportunity to be involved in a student Choreography Evening and our annual Showcase. This provides students with an opportunity to perform a class dance item and their group choreography item for an audience

Year 10

Year 10's have Dance twice a week for the year. This is a preparation course for Stage 1 and 2 going into Year 11.

The Year 10 Dance course allows students to gain an understanding of the physical competencies specific to dance, including experiential anatomy, strength, flexibility, coordination and creating and manipulating choreography . This is developed through the teachings of specific warm ups, centre work and dance sequences. Students also are involved in the creative process working together as a team to create their own group choreography and learning class Dance routines. Students study the genre’s and styles of Jazz and Contemporary Dance. This course allows students to visit the theatre to view a live Dance performance and learn how to critically review performances.

Year 10 Dance students are required to complete practical tasks throughout the semester. To assist students with these tasks, they will be have the opportunity to be involved in a student Choreography Evening and our annual Showcase.  This provides students with an opportunity to perform a class dance item and  their group choreography item for an audience.

Upper School 

Students are offered Stage 1 or 2 in Year 11 and then move onto Stage 2 or 3 in Year 12.

Students are introduced to the language of dance to reflect on and respond to their own work and the work of others. Through practical lessons in the genre’s of Jazz, Tap and Contemporary, they learn safe dance practices, improve their physical competencies and gain genre-specific technique. The introduction of performance qualities and etiquette is integral to their development as performers.

The elements of dance and processes of choreography are explored and students solve choreographic tasks to produce dance works for performance in Year 11/12 Choreography Evenings and Dance Showcase. Technologies and design concepts are introduced to the planning stage of dance creation. The students have opportunities to go and view live professional dance performances from companies such as STEPS Youth Dance Company and BUZZ Dance Company.

Dance in upper school allows you to create and communicate relevant thoughts, emotions and material through the medium of movement. An ideal course to de stress and interact with peers that develop self confidence, physical techniques, leadership skills, problem solving skills, self discipline and many other life skills.
