Students at Lumen have Music as an elective subject for either Semester 1 or 2. In this class, students have the opportunity to play piano/keyboard and guitar, learn the basics of music theory, and listen and analyse a variety of styles of music.
Students may choose to do one semester of Music (General Music) or Music for the whole year (Specialist Music). We encourage those students who are having lessons on an instrument or voice, or who have a strong interest in music, to select Specialist Music in Year 8.
Year 9 &10
Students have the option to take General Music or Specialist Music, with both courses running for the whole year.
General Music is a practical course designed for those students with an interest in Contemporary Music, and for those with an interest in music who perhaps haven’t studied music previously.
Students taking Specialist Music have a class before school and two classes during school hours per week. They will study the elements and concepts of music in a variety of contexts, including classical and jazz.
Year 11 & 12 students are offered Stage 1 (Contemporary Music, no WACE exam) or Stage 2 & 3 Music (Western Art/Classical, WACE Exam).
Several students who have completed Stage 2 & 3 Music at Lumen have gone on to study music at a tertiary level at the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) and the University of Western Australia (UWA).
