Term 2, Week 6 2023

Welcome to the Lumen Bulletin for Term 2, Week 6. As always, our students have participated in a range of events over the past 2 weeks including the Year 7 Kindness Challenge, the HBF Run for a Reason and Year 12 workshops.

The Year 7 Kindness Challenge incursion focused on developing kindness and compassion in our students. The aim of the Kindness Challenge incursion is to promote compassion and kindness in responding to others and for students to develop skills to support positive responses to challenging situations. Students have also had the opportunity to explore emotional literacy, including identifying how they feel in certain situations and identifying the emotions that affect their actions in a range of scenarios. These experiences have been valuable opportunities for the growth and development of our Year 7 students.

It was good for students and staff to once again participate in the HBF Run for a Reason. The weather was kind with clear skies and perfect temperatures. It was great to see this event ‘running’ again, the first time since 2019 due the impact of the pandemic. Lumen students contributed to the $1.14 million which has already been raised for 229 charities. The fundraising continues online via hbfrun.com.au until 23 June.

In addition to their participation in the HBF Run for a Reason, a number of our students took part in an activity day which included soccer, bocce, connect 4, goal ball, tennis games, time bomb. Students participated in a variety of sports, representing the College well, and we’re proud of their efforts.

During the Year 12 exam break, a large number of students participated in a range of workshops supporting them to develop a variety of life skills. Workshops included car maintenance classes, barista courses, make up classes and first aid training. We were encouraged to see high levels of participation in these workshops with students developing and broadening their interests.

I hope you enjoy reading this bulletin and hearing about the various events and opportunities our students have experienced over the past 2 weeks.

God Bless

Year 7 Kindness Challenge

The Year 7 students attended an incursion in the College gymnasium on Friday, 19 May.

The Incursion was led by Mrs Catherine Kolomyjec, a social worker who has recently worked with Stanford University looking at the development of compassion and other critical skills in young people. It was a heartfelt experience for all.

HBF Run for a Reason

We have now raised $1219 towards Vinnies Youth mental health services through donations and Vinnies Youth selling lollies and cookies.
It was a great morning and the staff and students enjoyed being involved in the HBF Run for a Reason this year.

Year 7 Emotional Literacy

In seminar today, the Year 7s completed a puzzle that helped them explore their emotional literacy. Research has suggested that when a student explores the range of emotions, they can better communicate how they feel. The day was a great exploration for all with our counselling team joining in and helping students on the day. We look forward to next week when we unpack some strategies for dealing with anxiety and anger.

Year 12 Workshops

As we bid farewell to the exam break, we are excited to share the incredible experiences our Year 12 General students had during this period. It was a time of exploration and skill-building, as our students eagerly participated in a series of workshops that broadened their horizons and equipped them with practical knowledge.

1. Special Occasion Makeup - Cleopatra's Temple: In collaboration with Cleopatra's Temple, our students had the remarkable opportunity to learn the art of special occasion makeup. Led by experienced professionals, this workshop provided hands-on guidance on enhancing one's features for various events. Our students embraced the opportunity to master techniques, from creating flawless bases to perfecting stunning eye and lip looks. The event was a resounding success, leaving our students feeling empowered and confident in their newfound skills.

2. RAC Car Maintenance Workshop: Understanding the importance of automotive knowledge, our students participated in an engaging car maintenance workshop organized by the RAC. The workshop was led by RAC experts and covered essential skills such as checking tyre pressure, checking oil, and troubleshooting fundamental car issues. Through interactive demonstrations and practical exercises, our students gained valuable insights into vehicle maintenance, empowering them with the skills necessary to become responsible and informed drivers.

3. RAC Presentations: Buying a Car, Drinks, Drugs, and Driving, Back Seat Driver: Continuing our partnership with RAC, our students engaged in a series of informative presentations addressing crucial topics related to car ownership and safe driving practices. The "Buying a Car" session equipped our students with the knowledge and tools to make informed decisions when purchasing their first vehicle. The "Drinks, Drugs, and Driving" workshop highlighted the risks and consequences associated with impaired driving, emphasising the importance of responsible choices. Lastly, the "Back Seat Driver" session provided practical tips on passenger safety and the role of individuals in ensuring a safe driving experience. These sessions facilitated open discussions, resulting in heightened awareness and responsible attitudes towards road safety.

4. Barista Course: With the growing popularity of coffee culture, our students seized the opportunity to enrol in a barista course. Led by experienced coffee professionals, this workshop provided hands-on training in coffee preparation, milk texturing, and customer service. Our students honed their skills, mastering the art of creating perfect coffee beverages. The barista course fostered a sense of creativity and entrepreneurship, igniting a passion for the culinary arts and hospitality industry within our students.

5. Senior First Aid Workshop: Equipping our students with essential lifesaving skills, the Senior First Aid Workshop run by Royal Lifesaving WA was an invaluable experience. The workshop was led by certified instructors, covering topics such as CPR, basic wound care, and responding to emergencies. Our students developed confidence in providing immediate assistance in critical situations through interactive simulations and practical scenarios. This workshop instilled a sense of responsibility and preparedness, ensuring our students can handle unforeseen circumstances and make a difference in someone's life.

We are immensely proud of our Year 12 General students for actively participating in these workshops and making the most of their exam break. These empowering experiences have not only provided practical skills but have also nurtured personal growth and a broader perspective on life beyond the classroom.

As we continue to foster a holistic learning environment we are grateful for the support of our community partners and dedicated staff who make such enriching opportunities possible for our students.

Year 9 Outdoor Education

Throughout Term 2, the Year 9 students at Lumen Christi College have been actively engaged in the invigorating and skill-building sport of archery. Led by Mr Sarolea and Mr Douglas, the archery program provides a unique opportunity for students to develop their physical coordination, mental focus, and teamwork skills.

The archery sessions took place within the outdoor grounds of the College, where a designated range was set up to ensure a safe and controlled environment for the students. Under the guidance of Mr Sarolea and Mr Douglas, the participants were introduced to the fundamental techniques and principles of archery.

During the program, students were exposed to various aspects of archery, including proper stance, posture, and grip, as well as techniques for drawing and releasing the bowstring accurately. Emphasis was placed on safety protocols and the responsible use of archery equipment, ensuring that all participants adhered to strict guidelines throughout their practice.

As the students progressed, they had the opportunity to refine their skills and increase their accuracy through a series of engaging target shooting exercises. These exercises challenged their concentration, patience, and ability to maintain composure under pressure. Individual feedback and personalised guidance were provided to each student, fostering their growth, and allowing them to develop at their own pace.
Congratulations to students on completing their archery unit and to those who hit a bullseye with their shots!

ACC Fun Run

On Friday 19th May the ACC Inclusive team took part in a Fun Run and Activity day at Jackadder Lake in Woodlands.

The students walked / jogged around the lake. As they went through the finish line, they were eager to encourage, cheer and clap other competitors, showing true Lumen spirit. They then rotated through a series of activities including Soccer, Bocce, Outdoor Connect 4, Goal Ball, Tennis Games, Time Bomb, Energisers and Kick Ball. The Inclusive team enjoyed the variety of sports and tried their hardest.

They networked with students from other schools and enjoyed a delicious barbeque prepared by some volunteer parents. This was topped off with an ice cream on the trip back to school. Well done to all involved!

Year 7 and 8 Poetry in Action

Years 7 and 8 students attended the Poetry in Action incursion, which was not only beneficial for their studies in poetry and song but was also phenomenal as a production. The national travelling poetry slam group brought poetry to life, as they performed the Elements of Rhyme show, where our Year 7 and 8 students were sent “…on a wild, funny and occasionally ludicrous ride!” The narrative followed an action-packed series of events where, “…in the depths of Poet Town, the new kid is humiliated in a very public rap battle by the baddest guy in town – Byron. Determined they won’t be defeated again, their new friend Sylvia takes them on a weird and wonderful journey to learn about: rhyme, imagery, narrative and theme.” Another successful show this year, and we are all very excited to see which poetic journey will ensue in 2024.

State War Memorial

On Wednesday the 31st of May, myself, Josh Norris, Tara Sice and the Indigenous students were invited to attend a beautiful service at the State War memorial in Kings Park.
The service was about recognising the indigenous soldiers and veterans that have been in the war and remembering them for their amazing efforts in protecting their country.
It was an amazing opportunity to listen to people share their story. It truly was an amazing day.

Spotlight on Mental Health

Having a good night sleep is crucial for your mental health. Most teenagers need about 9 hours of sleep per night, but many are not able to achieve this. So, instead focus on the quality of sleep, rather than the amount of hours you are sleeping.
The benefits of a quality night of sleep are:
       • Improved mood
       • Retaining memories
       • Thinking more quickly and clearly
       • Feeling energised
       • Staying physically healthy thanks to a strengthened immune system
       • Recover from and prevent injuries

Tips for a good night sleep
There are many techniques you can try to help you fall asleep faster and achieve quality sleep.

1. Regular exercise
Being active throughout the day can help tire your body to prepare it for sleep. Although make sure to leave 1-2 hours between vigorous activity and bedtime to allow your body to wind down.

2. Limit naps
Taking naps outside your normal sleep hours can disrupt your sleep routine and make it harder to go to sleep when you need to.

3. Reduce caffeine before bed
Stimulants such as caffeine and nicotine can keep your body and mind alert up to seven hours after they're consumed.

4. Allow yourself to wind down
Give your body and mind a chance to relax. In the 1-2 hours before bed, unwind through a calming activity like reading, watching TV, or having a bath – whatever works for you.

5. Be consistent with your bedtime
Going to bed at a similar time each night reinforces to your body that it's time to wind down.

6. Set a digital curfew
Avoid screens by turning your phone off or on 'do not disturb' at least 30 minutes before going to sleep. Consider leaving your device in another room. Screen light and apps are designed to trigger hormones in your brain that keep you alert.

7. Make your bedroom your sanctuary
Keeping your bedroom quiet, dark and cool will create a healthy sleeping environment.

8. Leave your worries out of the bedroom
If you find you're overthinking things, it may help to write down the thoughts you're experiencing to get them out of your head. Make a time to revisit them the next day so you know they will be dealt with, but not when you’re trying to sleep.

9. Get out of bed if you can’t sleep
If you’ve been trying to sleep for 30 minutes, but don’t feel sleepy, get up and do a relaxing activity. Try to avoid looking at your phone or watching TV. Go back to bed once you’re feeling sleepy again.
