Term 2, Week 10 2023

A warm welcome to the final Bulletin for Term 2. We are excited to share the news, events, and updates from the past two weeks.

On Monday 19th June and Wednesday 22nd June, we held our Inter House Athletics Carnival. Students had the opportunity to participate in various athletic sports throughout the day. We were extremely impressed with how the students performed with some students coming close to breaking long-held college records.

Since the last bulletin we have celebrated language week. This event gave students the opportunity to participate in a range of cultural experiences. Through experiencing a variety of food, dance, sporting and other activities, students were able to develop an understanding and appreciation for other cultures.
Our Year 8 & 9 social took place at the end of Week 9. The social is held annually to help build friendships, promote social interaction, and develop student and staff relationships. Throughout the afternoon, students participated in social activities such as basketball, futsal, e-sports, party games and enjoyed a barbeque. It was great to see students enjoying this special event together.

On Tuesday 27th of June, we also had our annual Music Showcase. Students ranging from Year 7, all the way to Year 12 performed musical items, demonstrating their musical talents. We are all very proud of how our students performed.

During weeks 1-3 of next term, I will be taking some Long Service Leave, spending time with my family in the UK and taking the opportunity to visit Europe. During my period of leave, Peter Sackett (Vice Principal) will be Acting Principal.

Finally, I would like to wish everyone a safe, happy and restful term break. We look forward to welcoming all students back for Term 3 on Monday, 17th July.

Please enjoy reading the rest of this bulletin.

Uniform Review

Uniform Review

Over the past semester we have been conducting a review of the College uniform, which has remained largely unchanged since the College was established in 1984. During this process, a range of options have been considered relating to both the design of the uniform and the supplier we use. These considerations have been informed through consultation with, and feedback from, student, parent and staff focus groups.

The aim has been to develop a ‘fresh look’ uniform to be phased in from the beginning of 2024. There will be a lengthy transition period and the details of which will be communicated later in the year.

After a comprehensive tender process, the decision has been made to switch to a new supplier, who offers a high-quality uniform at a competitive price. Uniform Concepts is a WA owned company providing uniforms to more than 170 primary and secondary schools across the state.

The main considerations guiding the final decisions regarding the uniform design are that it is:

Affordable

Comfortable

Durable

Contemporary.

Throughout Term 3, the final decisions regarding the new uniform will be made. We will provide regular updates to the community in this bulletin, about both the details of the new uniform and how the transition process from the current to the new uniform will be managed.

Over the Term 2 holidays, the uniform shop located at the College will be closed so that stocktaking can occur to facilitate this transition. From the beginning of Term 3, the College uniform shop will no longer be located on site. A greater range of purchasing options will be available, including online and at the Uniform Concepts superstore in Jandakot. Details of how to purchase uniform items for the remainder of 2023 will be communicated via a college circular at the beginning of Term 3.

Music Night

On the 27th June, we had the annual Lumen Christi College Music Night. Congratulations to all the students who performed in what was a great night filled with musical entertainment. On stage, we saw performances from Year 7 to 12 students which included class group items as well as performances from the College’s many elective ensembles that run before and after school. For some students, this was their first experience of performing in front of a large audience. This is no small accomplishment. In addition to the on-stage performances, the audience was treated to light entertainment in the foyer provided by some of our piano students at the college. Well done to all involved.

Year 10 HASS and Science WA Museum excursion

Year 10 HASS and Science classes visited the Western Australian Museum Boola Bardip as part of their studies. Students explored the wonders of the museum with a science lens linking their understanding of the universe with their knowledge and understanding of science. HASS studies are currently focused on the civil rights movement of the First Nations Peoples of Australia. Students explored the principles of human rights in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ struggle for equal rights, recognition, and self-determination. Using an inquiry based approach, students investigated first-person accounts and case studies of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander resistance, protest, and triumph in the Wesfarmers Ngalang Koort Boodja Wirn Gallery.

World Youth Day 2023 – Lisbon, Portugal

At the end of 2022, Ana Frankovic (Head of Year 9) was selected from a number of staff across the CEWA schools to make the pilgrimage to the World Youth Day in Lisbon, Portugal.

In August, Miss Frankovic will join thousands of young Catholics from across the globe for Mass with the Holy Father, Pope Francis during the week of celebrations.

The pilgrimage experience includes a 115km journey on foot from Tui, Portugal to Santiago de Compostela, Spain, a place that has welcomed pilgrims for centuries.

At the Community Mass on Friday, 30 July, Fr Philip Perreau commissioned Miss Frankovic with a special pilgrim’s blessing for her safe travel and return.

We wish Ana every blessing as she makes the journey and takes the prayer intentions of the community with her.

Buen Camino Ana.

Athletics Carnival

The past two weeks have been very busy for the sport department. There were the final round matches for the SASJ competition, the Twilight athletics carnival and the whole school House athletics carnival.

SASJ teams finished Term two fixtures well, with the boys’ soccer team winning the competition and the boys’ basketball, the girls’ netball and girls’ indoor beach volleyball teams all finishing the season in second.

The twilight athletics carnival was well attended by students, which set the tone for the main event on the Wednesday. Led by the Year 12 students, competition was tight all day and in the end Salvado took the win by 126 points from Tangney.

1st - Salvado 5550 points

2nd - Tangney 5424

3rd - Yagan 5277

4th - MacKillop 4671

Language Week

In week 7 this term, the College celebrated Language Week with a fun filled week of food and activities. All week Homeroom quizzes and search and find activities kept students busy and entertained.

On Tuesday Freo Pizza came to the school and cooked fresh pizzas for those lucky students and staff that had pre-ordered their Margherita or Ham and Cheese pizzas. Students were also taught about the history of pizza and took part in a variety of Kahoot quizzes in their language classes.

On Wednesday the annual Bocce Tournament was held during breaks one and two with many students participating and winning gelato vouchers. A fun time was had by all!

On Thursday the students were treated to the musical stylings of the Accordion Man - even the rain could not dampen their enthusiastic dancing with pre-ordered Biscotti and Cannoli available.
Friday saw Language Week come to an end with pre-ordered gelato available in the Jubilee Gardens at break two.

It was a fantastic week and it was heart-warming to see so many students take part in language activities with enthusiasm and plenty of energy.

Mock Trials 2023

The Law Society coordinates an inter-school Mock Trial Competition each year for students enrolled in Years 10, 11 and 12.

A mock trial is a simulated court case in which teams contest a fictitious legal matter presented in the Western Australia court system. The cases are presented by two teams – a prosecution/plaintiff team and a defence team – made up of students playing the roles of barristers, solicitors, witnesses and court officials. Each team participates in three rounds vying to win the case, but more importantly, win more points than their opposition. The top 16 teams advance to the final knockout rounds.

This year we entered two teams, Legally Lumen and Lumen Legends. Of the 20 participants, only 2 had previously participated in Mock Trials. Both teams worked very hard to prepare for each case and did a great job in all their rounds. Both teams had some success but they have learnt a great deal on the court procedures and will be ready for the 2024 competition.

Year 8 & 9 Social

On Friday 23rd June, Year 8 and 9 cohorts celebrated the end of Semester 1 with a social event. This event was held in the College’s Sport Centre which was transformed into a hub of fun. The evening was packed with excitement as our students engaged in a variety of activities designed to make lasting memories.

The Sport Centre buzzed with energy as the students immersed themselves in a thrilling silent disco, where they showcased their moves as they grooved to their favourite tunes. The dance floor was alive with laughter and contagious enthusiasm.

Sports enthusiasts showcased their skills in soccer and basketball tournaments. The competitive spirit was on full display as teams engaged in friendly rivalries, creating an electric atmosphere.
The popular ‘Just Dance’ competition had our students showing off their dance moves until the last few moments of the evening. We also had the tech-savvy individuals enjoy the E-Sports competition, showing each other their gaming skills.

Students also had the opportunity to relax in our dedicated chill-out zone which offered them a much-needed breather amidst the excitement.
Congratulations to Oscar and Payton who were our lucky door prize winners.

Thank you to the students who participated in the event. They conducted themselves well and with much enthusiasm.
A special thanks to all the dedicated staff who volunteered to be a part of the event. It seemed the excitement was equally enjoyed by them.

Heads of Year 8 & 9

Learning Behaviours

Our Vision for Learning, ‘Discover Together’, challenges us to inspire excellence within a welcoming community. The Vision for Learning encompasses the three pedagogical principles of Connect, Explore and Empower. Staff prioritise creating meaningful relationships and facilitating collaboration to enhance connections. Students are encouraged to explore and engage in their learning by discovering purpose in lessons, with teachers carefully planning the lesson structure. Additionally, staff empower students by considering individual student needs and using feedback effectively.

We encourage students to demonstrate Learning Behaviours that reflect our Vision for Learning.

In the Semester One reports, subject teachers have reported on these Learning Behaviours. Students are acknowledged as demonstrating each Learning Behaviour in the categories of ‘Always’, ‘Often’, ‘Sometimes’ or ‘Rarely’. We encourage students to reflect on the Learning Behaviours that they can focus on improving in Semester Two.
