Term 3, Week 2 2023

Term 3 has already seen students and staff participate in a wide range of learning activities; our careers day, academic assembly, Year 11 Emmaus retreat and earlier this week, we hosted special guest Paul Dillon who spoke to students, staff and parents about alcohol and drug trends amongst adolescents.

The Year 11 Emmaus retreat is often one of the most memorable experiences of a student’s high school journey. I would like to commend the students for their engagement with the sessions and encourage parents to discuss the experience with their child.

Our current Year 10 and 11 students are in the process of considering their study options for next year. Their subject selection preferences need to be submitted by Monday 7 August. If any student does not have their login details, they should contact Mr. McIntyre or melissa.meiselbach@cewa.edu.au

The College has also been preparing for the Dance Showcase which is fast approaching. Our talented students invite you to join them on the 31 August or the 1 September for our annual showcase. Details on how to obtain tickets will be released in the coming weeks.

The academic assembly in week 1 was an opportunity to celebrate our Light of Excellence. Over 130 high achieving Lumen students were formally recognised for their first semester achievements. During the assembly all students were encouraged to focus on the personal traits of perseverance, resilience, a positive mindset, integrity, and honesty, to assist them in achieving their own personal excellence.

The College has their usual Term 3 Tour occurring on Thursday 3 August. There are only a small number of places remaining for the tour, so if you know of any families wishing to attend, please ask them to register their interest as soon as possible.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support over the last few weeks as I stepped into the role of Acting Principal. We will welcome Karen back from leave during week 4.

Academic Assembly

Last Wednesday, many of our students were recognised with Academic Honours. To receive these honours, students need to obtain at least four A grades in the common curricular subjects. It was so pleasing to see 130 students recognised for their achievements from Semester 1. For a full list of award recipients, please click here

Year 11 Emmaus Retreat

Last week our Year 11s had the opportunity to participate in their annual Emmaus Retreat. This retreat takes place over two days and for the first time was an overnight event, with students staying in the Swan Valley.

This valuable experience provides students with the opportunity to strengthen their faith, relationships, self-awareness, and leadership through a number of practical and reflection based activities. It was amazing to see the students embrace their retreat and hopefully take away some skills and memories that they will stay with them going forward.

Careers Expo

On Tuesday 18 July, Lumen Christi College hosted a Careers Expo for our Year 10 students; bringing universities and various VET training providers together to showcase many different career pathways options available to students.

Students were able to utilise the event to meet one-on-one with experts in various industries, identify the steps required to reach their career aspirations and discover the variety of pathways available to them. The day concluded with a Parent Information Evening, which presented the different options available to students as they enter their final years of secondary schooling.

Paul Dillon

On Monday 24 July, Paul Dillon attended the College to present to our Year 10, 11 and 12 students about alcohol and other drug trends amongst adolescents in Australia. Through Paul’s engaging presentation style, up to date knowledge and real-life examples, he is able to promote a harm minimisation approach to assist young people in keeping themselves and others safe. Paul specifically addresses alcohol use and misuse, vaping, other illicit substances such as cannabis and inhalants, as well as a range of risk-taking behaviours. In addition to the student sessions, Paul presented to staff and parents about the role that we play in providing best-practice drug education, and the importance of working in partnership with each other. Student feedback has been very positive about the presentations, and we encourage parents to engage their children in conversations about their key messages that they received from the sessions. We thank Paul for his time and for continuing his work with our students and broader community. We look forward to seeing him again next year when he returns to the College. For parents interested in Paul’s contact information, he is most easily contacted via Instagram - Paul Dillon (@dillonpauldarta).

Vinnies Youth Conference Corner

Every student and member of our College community participate with Vinnies Youth when they support our activities e.g. supporting with donations, bringing in a jumper or purchasing an item from our stalls. There is however a core group of students who have consistently given of their time to support and be a member of the Vinnies Youth Conference here at Lumen Christi College. Students who have participated in at least two major events for Vinnies were awarded during last weeks assembly with their Vinnies Youth service badge. I am proud of the commitment and dedication these students have demonstrated in giving back to our community by helping those most vulnerable.

Coming events
This term, the Vinnies Youth look forward to continuing to provide a service to the community with a Father’s day stall, the Winter sleepout, Back to school appeal (mainly Year 12’s), and soup kitchens. The soup kitchens are scheduled for:

Week 4 9 August
Week 5 Friday 18 August cooking for sleepout and soup kitchen
