Term 3, Week 6 2023

As we come to an end of week 6, it’s my pleasure to share with you some of the events that have taken place at the College over the past couple of weeks.

On Tuesday, 15 August the College community joined together to celebrate the Feast of the Assumption of Mary. As always, we are grateful to Fr Philip Perreau for presiding over the Mass and enabling us to fulfill our obligations as a faith community.

During week 5, our Year 7 students enjoyed a movie afternoon, followed by a sausage sizzle giving them an opportunity to socialize together and enjoy each other’s company at this after-school event. Week 5 also saw students participate in the ‘Vinnie’s Sleepout’, which took place overnight on Friday, 18 August. The purpose of the sleepout is to give students the opportunity to gain an insight into some of the challenges associated with homelessness. Students gained a lot from this experience, and I’d like to thank the staff who supervised the sleepout enabling this event to take place.

This week we celebrated English week. On Monday, students and staff dressed as characters from their favourite books. The costumes were impressive, displaying lots of imagination and creativity and it was a pleasure to see so many participate. On Wednesday, over 200 students took part in the ‘write a book in a day’ event, which involved them working in teams to write and illustrate a book of between 3500 and 5000 words.

Next week (on Thursday, 31 August), we look forward to welcoming our fathers and father-figures to our annual Father’s Day breakfast. We hope to see you and your children at this special event.

I hope you enjoy reading the rest of this bulletin.

Year 7 Social

On Friday, 11 August, the Year 7s took part in the Year 7 Social. They took the red carpet for a movie afternoon with friends in the Performing Arts Centre. The film ‘Mitchell’s vs the Machines’ is a comedy animation that explores the themes of technology taking over our lives and the importance of family and being unique. The students shared many laughs and came away with some important messages. This event closed with hotdog, juices, a photobooth and an opportunity to unwind with their fellow peers as they continue to build connections and friendships they have already made in the 6 months of being in the Lumen community.

Head of Year 7

Year 7 Retreat

The Year 7 had the opportunity to explore their spirituality at the Year 7 Retreat. They explored three major themes: exploring our emotions, handling gossip culture and finding our personal strengths. The students were excellent on the day as they embraced each other with open ears and hearts and grew together as a year group. We hope that they continue to develop these supportive relationships throughout their years at the college.

Head of Year 7

Assumption Mass

The College gathered on Tuesday, 15 August to mark the Solomon Feast of the Assumption of Mary. Fr Philip Perreau presided over the Mass and in his homily, he reminded those gathered of the happiness that awaits us in heaven.

English Week

This week at our college, we began one of the most joyous literary celebrations of the year – English Week/CBCA Book Week. To say that it was outstanding is an understatement. On Monday, all staff and students dressed as noted literary characters, with countless outfits and disguises in sight. We had the entire cast of Shrek, Room on the Broom, Barbie, Miss Peregrine and The Great Gatsby, to name a few. The Amazing Book Race and Book Swap were a great success, and we are very proud of the challenging literary questions students were so easily able to answer. The following day, on Tuesday, our Literature and Drama senior school students enjoyed a relaxing evening at the Shakespeare Film Night as they viewed Othello and Dead Poet’s Society, which was instrumental in broadening their knowledge of classic texts. English/Book Week ended with a magnificent bang with the annual Write a Book in a Day competition, where 200 students across all year groups worked tirelessly (yet so very enthusiastically) in teams to compose, illustrate and publish a 5,000 word story for children receiving cancer treatment. We are beyond proud of our budding writers and artists, and especially their drive to raise funds for such a worthy cause. I thank our community for supporting the English Department and Discovery Centre staff as our college embarked on this unforgettable celebration of literature, the arts and language.\

Vinnies Youth Conference Corner

It is humbling to belong to such a giving community. Last Friday night we held the Vinnies Sleepout for the homeless. There were 39 rough sleepers who spent the evening cooking for the less fortunate and participating in activities, reflections and information talks about the homeless situation in Australia. The group was able to have an insight into where the food we cook and the donations we make ends up.
Bridget from Kelmscott Vinnies shared some stories of how the Kelmscott soup kitchen came about and the people that come every week for a hot meal. Keenan from St Vincent De Paul spoke to us about the amount of homeless in Perth at the moment. He mentioned that there was 10,000 people who are sleeping rough each night.
The wonderful staff at Lumen donated all the ingredients for the event including the soup kitchen to feed the rough sleepers and breakfast. We were able to make an additional 60 meals for those less fortunate needing a helping hand.
From a student:
“I also want to quickly thank you for the sleepout last week, I found it inspiring (the talks from volunteers) and an eye opener to what homeless people go through. I enjoyed most of the night too, I'm glad there were fun games and friendly people around to enjoy the experience with. Thanks again.”

Students fundraised by selling chocolates and lollies as well as sending out the fundraising link to family and friends. There is still a small amount of time to donate if you have been meaning to with the following link https://vinnies-wa.grassrootz.com/vinnies-wa-school-sleepout/lcc-vinnies-youth-winter-sleepout-2023 at time of writing this we have raised $2,527 with some chocolate money still to be added. This is an amazing effort to all involved!
