The Lumen Bulletin - Term 4 Week 2

Welcome to Term 4. I hope that all students had a restful term break and have enjoyed their first two weeks of term.

Many of our Year 12 students have been working hard over recent weeks preparing for, and completing, their final school-based examinations. The results of these exams contribute significantly to their final ATAR score. ATAR examinations begin soon and we keep students in our thoughts and prayers as they prepare for these exams.

Preparations for tonight’s Graduation Ceremony have been a particular focus over the past few weeks. At this ceremony, we look forward to celebrating the achievement of our Year 12 students as well as giving them a fitting Lumen farewell.

After a long and thorough process, the Student Leaders for 2024 have been selected. I would like to congratulate all students who nominated for these roles, as well as those who were successful in their nominations. I look forward to working with our 2024 Student Leaders next year. A full list of these leaders is included in this bulletin.

On Monday, I attended the CEWA Staff Breakfast and Quality Catholic Education (QCE) Awards at Optus stadium. At this annual event, the service and commitment of staff to Catholic Education in WA is recognised. Katherine Voola, our Head of VET and Transition Services, was acknowledged for 30 years of service to Catholic Education in Western Australia. On behalf of the Lumen community, I extend our thanks and congratulations to Katherine for her commitment and dedication. We were also delighted to receive a QCE Merit Award for The Eucharist Project led by our Deputy Principal Mission, Caroline Watson, and delivered by our Student Leaders.

As mentioned in previous bulletins and communications, we have been working on the development of a new college uniform throughout this year. Focus groups of staff, students and parents have been providing valuable insight and feedback to the Leadership Team and uniform suppliers as we work to develop a new uniform that is contemporary, comfortable, durable and affordable. We are very excited about our new uniform and are currently completing the finishing touches before unveiling it to the community in coming weeks. More information about the uniform is included in this bulletin.

Congratulations to our 2024 Student Leadership Team:

Over the course of Term 3, hard-working groups of students, parents and staff continued the development of the fresh look uniform for 2024. Consultation with these groups continued to ensure that each of the items included in the new range would meet the goals established earlier at the outset of the uniform review process. Selecting fabrics and styles that are both contemporary and comfortable was a focus of the work, underpinned by the desire for any changes to be both affordable and durable.

As the design process is nearing the end of its last stage, with the core items selected and final trims and finishes considered, we are moving quickly towards revealing the uniform to the wider college community in the coming weeks.
Accompanying the official reveal will be further information about the transition period to the new uniform and details of how and when it will be available for purchase. This information will be accompanied by the revised uniform and presentation guideline, for both the existing and new uniforms, in place from January 2024.

The current uniform remains available from Uniform Concepts’ Jandakot store and many items are now available at a reduced price.

During the school holidays, one of our students, Jessica Collins, in Year 7, competed in the WA State BMX Championships held at the Southside BMX track in Bull Creek. She competed in the 13 girl's division and took out 1st place. Jessica has also achieved the 1st place for the 2023 series. Next month, Jessica will compete in the AusCycling National Championships in Shepparton, Victoria, which will be televised on SBS. Well done, Jessica on this fantastic achievement, and we wish you all the best in the upcoming championships.

The Year 11 Modern History students visited the Holocaust Institute of WA as part of their studies of Nazi Germany. Students undertook a workshop that gives history a voice, bringing it to life and intertwining lessons of the Holocaust and our social responsibilities today.

“The workshop was insightful, learning people’s experiences which opened my worldview and stress the importance of empathy and taking action” Josie

“The workshop enlightened us, teaching us lessons on the devasting Holocaust and the tragic experiences that too many people felt under the cruel Nazi authority. Being able to understand this horrific historical event allowed us to fight for change in today’s world.” Alessia

Welcome to Term 4. This is a busy term for the Lumen Community in being able to reach out and providing support to the people in need in our area.
Well done to the Year 12s who donated their unused stationery to the Vinnies Back to school appeal. We were able to collect a large tub of resources which included 2 boxes of exercise books to donate. Come January as families start to prepare for school this will help elevate some of the stress.

Year 11 students are currently being asking to donate a present for their contribution to the Vinnies Christmas appeal. There are 40 children under the age of 12, both boys and girls, that the Kelmscott Vinnies support. This donated gift in some cases will be the only gift the child will receive this Christmas.
Senior homerooms have the option of donating money and buying one larger gift from their homeroom or several smaller gifts. I really encourage the Year 11s to put some thought into the gift to ensure these children have something to open on Christmas morning. All members of the College if they are in the position to, are encouraged to donate to the gift giving component of our Christmas appeal as well. If you have an unused gift at home please consider donating it. Some of the parents may be lucky enough to also receive a gift with their food hamper!

Years 7 – 10 will be asked to start bringing in food donations from week 5 onwards towards the Christmas appeal. More information to come.

The College has been advised by Transperth that the Armadale Line closure will have an impact on services running to and from Lumen Christi. Please see the information from them, below, noting that this will impact services from Monday of week 7 of term.

Armadale Train Line and Routes 210, 211, 220, 228, 233 and School Special 758
Effective Monday 20 November 2023

The Armadale/Thornlie Line will close from Monday, 20 November 2023 until mid-2025 as part of METRONET works. During the shutdown, there will be no train services between Armadale/Thornlie and Victoria Park. Trains will continue to operate between Victoria Park and Perth stations, with seven new and five enhanced bus routes introduced to the bus network to support existing timetabled services.

Passengers are encouraged to plan ahead as travel times will increase during the shutdown. Further information is available on the Transperth website here; Armadale and Thornlie Line Shutdown (transperth.wa.gov.au)

Additionally, there will be widespread changes to regular Transperth bus services to coordinate with the above changes. Routes 210, 211, 220, 228, 233 and School Special 758 will undergo times changes.

Additionally, some services will undergo Stand changes at some Stations;
- School Special 758 will now depart Stand 1 (Stop 28895) from a new temporary bus interchange at Armadale Station, and from Stand 2 (Stop 22037) at Kelmscott Station.
- Route 228 services will now depart from Stand 4 (Stop 22736) at Gosnells Station.
New timetables for affected bus routes are already available on the Transperth website, and the Transperth Journey Planner has already been updated with the changes occurring due to these works. Passengers just need to ensure they select a date after Monday 20 November 2023 to see the new timetable information.

Transperth strongly recommends passengers familiarise themselves with changes that will impact their journey’s by using the Journey Planner.

Please be aware that the College also runs a number of private bus services which may provide alternatives to the Transperth services. Details can be found on the College website here. Feedback requesting intentions to use the private bus services in 2024 was sent out as a separate communication on 13 October.
