The Lumen Bulletin - Term 4 Week 4

Welcome to our week 4 bulletin.

At the end of week 2, we farewelled our Year 12 students as they completed their formal schooling. Students, parents and staff came together for a formal ceremony acknowledging and celebrating the graduating Class of 2023. It was a wonderful evening and a fitting way in which to farewell our students. Our Year 12 ATAR students are currently completing their exams. We keep them in our thoughts and prayers at this time.

This week we said goodbye to our year 11 cohort who have completed their formal lessons for the year. Year 11 ATAR exams start next week, and we wish those students sitting exams all the very best.

Last week our diversity students participated in a sports festival at John XXIII College. The festival consisted of a variety of sports giving students the opportunity to demonstrate their many abilities. It was an excellent day, and it was great to see the students having such an enjoyable time.

This week we unveiled the new uniform to staff and students. The ‘reveal’ was greeted with lots of enthusiasm and excitement. As previously stated, the new uniform will be worn by all Year 7s from the beginning of the 2024 academic year. All other students will be able to wear the uniform if they wish, but there will be no requirement for them to do so before the 2026 academic year. On Friday 27 October 18 students travelled to John XXIII College to join many other Catholic Colleges to participate in the ACC ISP Multi-sport day.

The students participated in sports such as Blind Soccer, Cricket, Tennis, Rugby, AFL, Soccer, Volley Ball and Rowing. At each sport station the students learnt the skills of the respective sport they participated in.

Everyone took part with enthusiasm and enjoyed the day. They interacted well with the other schools, learnt good sportsmanship and represented the college well.

A big thank you to the Teaching Assistants that accompanied the students to ensure that the students were safe and had a great day. A massive thank you to Craig Preshaw who drove the bus and ensured that we got to John XXIII and back to school safely.

Dayna Wallington, year 8, has been selected as a member of the Infusion Junior Synchronised Ice Skating Team – Western Australian Representatives for 2023. It is a great honour to be selected to represent your state and we are thrilled that the Infusion Junior team has been given this opportunity to compete against the strongest teams in the country.

Dayna’s team will be competing at the Australian Figure Skating Championships in Erina, NSW to be held during the period from 1st December 2023 to 8th December 2023.

Democracy in action was evident in Mr Oversby’s Year 7 HASS class. Students were asked to collaborate in a debate on whether Western Australia should become independent or stay as part of the Commonwealth of Australia. Arguments were delivered with emotion, dazzling the audience with data and eye-catching political posters. The lesson was an excellent example of teaching and learning supporting the College Vision for Learning. Pedagogy engaged students’ interests, accessing technology, and facilitating collaboration. Humanities curriculum addresses four skill areas, questioning and researching, analysing, evaluating, and communicating and reflecting. All of these were demonstrated by the students. Great work Year 7s!

This week we say farewell to the Year 11s. Thank you to the students who have donated towards the Vinnies Christmas appeal donating gifts for the children Kelmscott Vinnies support.

This donated gift in some cases will be the only gift the child will receive this Christmas.
 All members of the College are encouraged to donate to the gift giving component of our Christmas appeal as well. If you have an unused gift at home please consider donating it.
Wednesday, during Assembly the Vinnies Youth launched the annual Christmas food drive.
Years 7 – 10 will be asked to start bringing in food donations from Week 5 onwards towards the Christmas food appeal. Please send your donations in through homerooms. All non -perishable in date foods are welcomed, in particular Christmas themed foods

The College has been advised by Transperth that the Armadale Line closure will have an impact on services running to and from Lumen Christi. Please see the information from them, below, noting that this will impact services from Monday of week 7 of term.

Armadale Train Line and Routes 210, 211, 220, 228, 233 and School Special 758

Effective Monday 20 November 2023

The Armadale/Thornlie Line will close from Monday, 20 November 2023 until mid-2025 as part of METRONET works. During the shutdown, there will be no train services between Armadale/Thornlie and Victoria Park. Trains will continue to operate between Victoria Park and Perth stations, with seven new and five enhanced bus routes introduced to the bus network to support existing timetabled services.

Passengers are encouraged to plan ahead as travel times will increase during the shutdown. Further information is available on the Transperth website here; Armadale and Thornlie Line Shutdown (transperth.wa.gov.au)

Additionally, there will be widespread changes to regular Transperth bus services to coordinate with the above changes. Routes 210, 211, 220, 228, 233 and School Special 758 will undergo times changes.

Additionally, some services will undergo Stand changes at some Stations;

- School Special 758 will now depart Stand 1 (Stop 28895) from a new temporary bus interchange at Armadale Station, and from Stand 2 (Stop 22037) at Kelmscott Station.
- Route 228 services will now depart from Stand 4 (Stop 22736) at Gosnells Station.
New timetables for affected bus routes are already available on the Transperth website, and the Transperth Journey Planner has already been updated with the changes occurring due to these works. Passengers just need to ensure they select a date after Monday 20 November 2023 to see the new timetable information.

Transperth strongly recommends passengers familiarise themselves with changes that will impact their journey’s by using the Journey Planner.

Please be aware that the College also runs a number of private bus services which may provide alternatives to the Transperth services. Details can be found on the College website here. Feedback requesting intentions to use the private bus services in 2024 was sent out as a separate communication on 13 October.
