The Lumen Bulletin - Term 4 Week 6

As the weeks pass by, and the end of year draws nearer, our students have been busy with a range of activities across several year groups.

On Friday this week, we were delighted to welcome the Year 7 cohort of 2024. Witnessing the enthusiasm of these students at their orientation day today, their bright and inspired attitudes will hold them in good stead for the years to come. With more than 170 Year 7 students set to join us next year, we eagerly anticipate the unique gifts and talents they will bring to our school community.

Last week, our Year 7 Humanities & Social Sciences students embarked on an enlightening excursion to Parliament House, the Constitutional Centre, and the Educational Electoral Centre in West Perth. This experience was designed to cultivate a deeper understanding of their democratic rights as Australians, fostering a sense of civic responsibility among our young minds.

Additionally, our Year 9 students recently participated in a career program at the South Metropolitan TAFE, providing them with valuable insights into potential career paths beyond high school. The event was a resounding success, with students expressing keen interest in exploring and shaping their future options.

This year, Remembrance Day was recognised in Homeroom Liturgies on Friday 10 November. Several readers in each Homeroom provided details of the historical background to the First World War armistice on 11 November 1918, and how 11:00 on 11 November is now the official time where we recognise all those who, through serving their country, have died, or suffered in wars and armed conflicts.

The Liturgy included an Acknowledgement of Country. Prayers of the Faithful, a reading of John McCrae’s poem “In Flanders Fields”, followed by the Last Post, a minute’s silence and concluded with the Rouse.

To complement students’ learning in Humanities and Social Sciences for Term 4, last week the Year 7 Lumen Christi College students visited Parliament House, the Constitutional Centre, and the Educational Electoral Centre in West Perth. Students were able to observe the West Australian State Parliament in action by visiting both the Legislative Assembly and the Legislative Council. Students were also able to engage and learn about our democratic responsibilities in elections and were able to explore the importance of the Australian Constitution.

The Year 7 students were able to utilise the excursion to meet a few prominent Western Australian parliamentarians including, Dr Tony Buti the Minister for Education, the Attorney General Mr John Quigley and the State’s Deputy Premier Mrs Rita Saffioti, who came to speak to the students and answer any questions they had. The day was enjoyed by all students who now have a much greater understanding of Australia’s democratic rights and responsibilities.

Last Friday, the Year 9 students attended a Career Taster Program at South Metropolitan TAFE Murdoch. The day was educational and enjoyable for all participants. The event's highlight was the exploration of various aspects of horticulture, floristry, and the intricate art of repotting plants. Students were actively engaged in hands-on activities, gaining valuable insights into these fields. The experience broadened students' understanding of the diverse career options within the horticultural industry and allowed them to appreciate the skills involved in floristry and plant care. Overall, it was a day filled with discovery, fostering a sense of enthusiasm and curiosity among the students about potential career pathways in horticulture.

A significant number of Year 9 students from Lumen Christi College will soon be undertaking an education tour of the national capital. Students will be given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $510 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.

With the cost of living continuing to rise, it is wonderful to see that our community is still working together to help those in need. Well done to the Year 11 students on donating Christmas gifts that will be distributed with the Christmas food hampers to families registered at Kelmscott Vinnies for assistance during the holiday season

Please remember to send in food donations towards the Christmas food appeal. Please send your donations in through homerooms. All non -perishable in date foods are welcomed, in particular Christmas themed foods.

Our Vision for Learning, ‘Discover Together’, challenges us to inspire excellence within a welcoming community. The Vision for Learning encompasses the three pedagogical principles of Connect, Explore and Empower.

We encourage students to demonstrate Learning Behaviours that reflect our Vision for Learning. Students are given opportunity to create meaningful relationships and collaborate well with others. Students should engage in their learning by maintaining focus and contributing effectively to discussion. Students are expected to be prepared for class and seek and act on feedback to support with their learning.

Subject teachers report on these Learning Behaviours in the semester reports. Students are acknowledged as demonstrating each Learning Behaviour in the categories of ‘Always’, ‘Often’, ‘Sometimes’ or ‘Rarely’. Students who receive ‘Always’ across a number of categories and subjects will gain points towards their House.

We encourage students to reflect on the Learning Behaviours that they currently demonstrate in lessons, and those that they can focus on improving.

University Early Offer Program

Conditional Offer
If your predicted ATAR is less than five points above the ATAR score required for your course, you can still receive an early offer for a place at University.
You’ll need to achieve a final ATAR that meets course entry requirements and meets WACE, English and subject requirements for the course.

Unconditional Offer
If your predicted ATAR is five points above the required ATAR score for your selected course, you’ll receive an early offer to secure your place in semester 1, 2024. This should not be used as an opportunity to check out of your courses; keeping up with your academic rigour is encouraged, as you will still need to complete WACE and meet the English and subject requirements for the chosen course. Some universities offer a discount on student fees as an incentive to keep motivated as long as the predicted ATAR stays the same.
