The Lumen Bulletin - Week Three Term One

As we come to the end of Week Three, I’d like to remind you of some important information and share with you some of the many activities that have occurred over the past couple of weeks.

During the first few weeks of term, a number of Parent Information Nights have taken place. Parent support for these nights has been strong, with high levels of engagement which serves to strengthen the partnership between home and school. When parents and teachers communicate regularly and respectfully, important information is shared about students' needs and progress. This can help to identify and address any issues or concerns in a timely manner. By working together, we can create an environment where students can thrive and reach their full potential.

Our final Parent Information Night will take place next week, with the Year 7 Parent Information Evening commencing at 5:30pm in the G Centre.

Points of Contact

I would like to remind parents and caregivers of the importance of keeping the College informed of any information which may help us to support the wellbeing or academic progress of your child. The information below includes the most appropriate point of contact for specific matters.

For brief, straightforward communication, email is generally the best option. Staff will endeavour to respond to emails within two working days. 

For more complex situations, a phone conversation with the relevant staff member is the best option. If there is a specific issue you wish to discuss, please contact the appropriate member of staff either on their direct line, details of which are included on their email signature, or via College reception on 9394 9300. 

Ordination of Deacon Errol Lobo 
Deacon Errol Lobo will be ordained into the priesthood on Friday, 19 April at 7.00 pm at St Mary’s Cathedral. Deacon Errol has a strong connection with the College and has extended an invitation to all in our community to attend. Deacon Errol has stressed that everyone, Catholic or not, is very welcome to attend both the Ordination Mass and/or any of the Masses of Thanksgiving being celebrated in the parishes. Extracurricular opportunities at Lumen Christi College 
Lastly, I would like to encourage all students to familiarise themselves with the various extracurricular opportunities available to them at our college. From student support sessions, SASJ (Interschool Sport), Dance Troupe, Dance Club, Instrumental and Voice Lessons, to the Yearbook Club, students have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of activities. This week, the College took time to prepare for Lent by participating in the time-honoured tradition of pancake eating on Shrove Tuesday and participating in a period of reflection at Ash Wednesday liturgies on Wednesday. The liturgies were held in Houses with House Coordinators and House Captains leading each of the Houses through a series of prayers and the distribution of ashes.

Today during break 1, the Year 11 prefects set up a Picnic Day for all the new students and Year 7s entering Lumen Christi College. The event was planned out by the prefects, and it was a major success. There were tons of activities that were shared between all the Year 7s, and the prefects interacted with all students. We also gave out icy poles to keep cool during this hot summer day. Mr Castiello and Ms Tranquille made a special appearance to have fun with all the Year 7s. Overall, it was a great day for the Year 7s to enjoy themselves after a long and warm week.

Last week, the College held our first Academic Awards Assembly for the year. We celebrated some of our top performing students from the Class of 2023, as well as a number of Year 8-12 students for their outstanding Semester 2 2023 results. Well done to all of the award winners.

On Friday, 9 February I had the opportunity to visit the Year 12 Certificate IV in Education Support students at the Fremantle Education Centre (FEC). Students always love getting a visit from a staff member, and they were hard at work getting through their first unit. This qualification enables students to gain entry into university for most courses, which have an ATAR requirement of 70.

On Wednesday, 14 February our Year 11 and 12 Drama students participated in a critical review excursion, attending the interactive performance of The Pool by Steve Rodgers at Bold Park Aquatic Centre. Students listened to the show through headphones and heard the various stories of people at the pool, with the final scene having select audience members in the pool with the actors.

High school is an exciting time in your teen’s life. During their transition to high school, they will experience new challenges and plenty of changes. You can support your teen by talking to them about any worries they may have during this time. Some of the changes your teen is likely to face during transition include:

• being separated from the friends they made at primary school
• meeting new people and making new friends
• navigating their new school campus
• learning different rules and expectations
• getting to know multiple teachers
• managing their study schedule and a new routine
• moving into adolescence and experiencing puberty

Our Vision for Learning, ‘Discover Together’, challenges us to inspire excellence within a welcoming community. We hope that students have been warmly welcomed into their new classes, have enjoyed meeting their teachers and peers, and are excited for the year ahead!

Staff prioritise creating meaningful relationships and facilitating collaboration to enhance connections. Students are encouraged to explore and engage in their learning by discovering purpose in lessons, with teachers carefully planning the lesson structure. Additionally, staff empower students by considering individual student needs and using feedback effectively.

It is important for students to engage with our Vision for Learning, and we encourage students to demonstrate Learning Behaviours that reflect this. Subject teachers report on these Learning Behaviours.
Additionally, providing opportunities for student voice is important to engage students with their learning. We strive to create supportive learning environments where there is regular opportunity for students to provide feedback. We are all learners and our Vision for Learning sets high expectations for learning. Staff are committed to working together and developing their practice to ensure an engaging learning environment for students. We look forward to seeing students engage with our Vision for Learning and celebrating their successes and growth in 2024.

The College will celebrate Harmony Week from 18 – 22 March. Across the week there will be a range of cultural workshops and demonstrations as well as our annual Cultural Dress Parade and International Lunch.
On Thursday, 21 March (Harmony Day), at 9am the College will hold the Harmony Day Mass, celebrated by the Auxiliary Bishop of Perth, Bishop Don Sproxton. We invite all families and friends to join us for this celebration of faith and culture.

In preparation for the week, we are looking for volunteers and donations in the following areas:

• Harmony Day Mass – Parents and friends who would be interested in participating in the Mass through reading or singing.
• Harmony Day Stories – Parents or friends who would like to participate in a ‘Human Library’ by sharing stories and information about their culture.
• Cultural Bears – We are looking for some volunteers to join with students to dress a Teddy Bear in cultural dress for a display in the library.
• Donations of International Lollies and Sweets

The College will be submitting the annual data return relating to student addresses to the Commonwealth Government on 6 March. Information for parents/caregivers is contained in this link Privacy Collection Notice.

We would ask that all parents and caregivers review the address details contained on your 2024 fee statement and advise if there are any corrections required e.g.

• if you live in an apartment/unit, is the unit number included and correct?
• if you live on a sub-divided block is the letter of the street number correct i.e. 23, 23A, 23B etc?
• for new and recently constructed properties, do you have the correct street address, not a plot number?

If your address details are correct, there is no action required. If details need to be updated, please email the changes to lumen@lumen.wa.edu.au by 29 February.

We were incredibly proud and excited to cheer on our Lumen Christi College alum, Mitch Wishnowsky in the recent NFL Super Bowl. Mitch is a punter for the San Francisco 49ers, who took on the Kansas City Chiefs earlier this week. This was the second Super Bowl that Mitch has played in, having also played the Chiefs in 2020. Unfortunately, it was the Chiefs who came away with the win again this year. Well done to Mitch for making it to the Super Bowl. We look forward to seeing where his NFL career takes him next.

As a performing chorister with The Australian Girls Choir, Year 10 student Hannah Altorfer was recently called to sing for the opening of The Women’s International Test Cricket Match on Thursday, 15 February. Congratulations, Hannah.
