Week Five, Term One 2024

From the Principal

Welcome to the end of Week 5. Over the last fortnight, our students have participated in a range of sporting activities, such as the Inclusive Sports Beach Carnival, Interhouse Swimming Carnival, and SASJ. It has been wonderful to witness the encouragement and collegiality amongst students at these events, along with a healthy dose of competitive spirit. Well done to everyone who has participated in these events. I would like to say a special congratulations to Tangney House, who once again took home the Champions shield at the Interhouse Swimming Carnival.

Today, our Year 7 students are participating in their Activity Day at Swan Valley Adventure Centre. This is a key day in the Year 7 calendar, providing an opportunity for students to develop friendships, and practice collaboration skills that will assist them in navigating their way through high school. I trust that the Year 7s enjoy themselves and that they will return home with some great stories to share.

The Year 12 Emmaus Retreat takes place next week, with students spending three days reflecting on their faith journey and life experiences so far. I wish them well on their Retreat and look forward to sharing their experiences with them during this time.

As we come to the end of another school week, I would like to wish you all a safe and happy long weekend.

God Bless.

College Principal

Interhouse Swimming Carnival

On Tuesday, 27 February we held our annual Interhouse Swimming Carnival at Armadale Fitness and Aquatic Centre. Students nominated in advance if they wanted to swim, and we took approximately 450 students on the day.

The atmosphere throughout the day was brilliant and it was wonderful to see the effort put in by so many to represent their House.

Competition was fierce throughout the day with Salvado and Tangney fighting for top spot, while MacKillop and Yagan struggled to stay away from last place. Campbell was happy with staying in the middle of all the action.

After all events were over, the results were close:
1st Tangney – 2224 points
2nd Salvado – 2000 points
3rd Campbell – 1686 points
4th Yagan – 1324 points
5th MacKillop – 1323 points

Students who placed in the top two spots in an event will be notified soon about the ACC Interschool Swimming Team. This team competes on Monday, 18 March.

ACC Inclusive Sports Beach Carnival

On Friday, 16 February an enthusiastic group of students travelled to Sorrento to participate in the annual ACC Inclusive Sports Program (ISP) Beach Carnival. The first event of the day was the Ironman Enticer. Several Lumen students had a go, with Omid Mohammadi gaining a medal for third place. The main Ironman/Ironwoman events saw many students nominate and give their all in swimming, beach running and paddling on body boards. The students then participated in various beach games, leaky pipes, sand tunnels, body boarding and sponge bucket races. We finished the day with a sausage sizzle, juice box and an ice cream on the bus ride home. Thank you to the Diversity Education staff and Mr Craig Preshaw for being our surf rescue staff member, and for driving the bus while towing the trailer full of our equipment.

Mock Trial Competition

The Law Society of WA’s Mock Trial Competition has begun for 2024 and once again Lumen Christi has two teams participating - Lumen and Order and Legally Lumen. A mock trial is a simulated court case in which teams contest a fictitious legal matter presented in the Western Australia court system. This competition is open for students in Year 10-12. Our first trial is a criminal case on an alleged assault, and we will be presenting on Tuesday, 12 March at the Supreme Court of WA against St James Anglican School. Our teams meet every Tuesday afternoon to prepare for upcoming trials.

Harmony Week 2024

The College will celebrate Harmony Week from 18 – 22 March. Across the week there will be a range of cultural workshops and demonstrations as well as our annual Cultural Dress Parade and International Lunch.

On Thursday, 21 March (Harmony Day), at 9am the College will hold the Harmony Day Mass, celebrated by the Auxiliary Bishop of Perth, Bishop Don Sproxton. We invite all families and friends to join us for this celebration of faith and culture.

In preparation for the week, we are looking for volunteers and donations in the following areas:

  • Harmony Day Mass – Parents and friends who would be interested in participating in the Mass through reading or singing.
  • Harmony Day Stories – Parents or friends who would like to participate in a ‘Human Library’ by sharing stories and information about their culture.
  • Cultural Bears – We are looking for some volunteers to join with students to dress a Teddy Bear in cultural dress for a display in the library.
  • Donations of International Lollies and Sweets - we are calling for donations of international sweets/lollies/cakes etc. Please if you are able to grab some for the big day, we would be very grateful if you could bring them to C block office.

More information about the day will be available in the coming weeks and will be sent to families via email.

If you would like to contribute to one of the areas listed above, please email caroline.watson@cewa.edu.au for more information.

On Thursday 24th August the Year 11 students had a special night at their annual River Cruise. It was an amazing night and chance for everyone to come together and celebrate the year.
Students boarded the Crystal Swan from Barrack Street Jetty in what was a night to remember, using this event as an opportunity to connect with their peers in their final years at the college. The students represented themselves and college amazingly. They dressed to impress and danced the entire night.
Photos from the night can be viewed here

Australian Government Address Collection 2024

The College will be submitting the annual data return relating to student addresses to the Commonwealth Government on 6 March. Information for parents/caregivers is contained in this link Privacy Collection Notice.

We would ask that all parents and caregivers review the address details contained on your 2024 fee statement and advise if there are any corrections required e.g.

if you live in an apartment/unit, is the unit number included and correct?
if you live on a sub-divided block is the letter of the street number correct i.e. 23, 23A, 23B etc?
for new and recently constructed properties, do you have the correct street address, not a plot number?

If your address details are correct, there is no action required. If details need to be updated, please email the changes to lumen@lumen.wa.edu.au.
