Week Seven, Term One 2024

From the Principal

As the end of Term One approaches, the College calendar has shown no signs of slowing down, with a large number of events, excursions and learning opportunities recently taking place, both inside the classroom and out. From International Women’s Day events to SASJ, an ACC Inclusive Sport Cricket Carnival, Indigenous Cultural Program and even a return visit from some of our alumni, the College has been a hive of activity.

Amongst the busyness, our Year 7 and 9 students have been preparing for NAPLAN, which commenced this week and continues next week. I wish all students the very best throughout this testing period.

Our Year 12 students participated in their Emmaus Retreat last week. The Retreat provided students with an opportunity to reflect on their time at the College and was a very special experience which I had the pleasure of joining them for. You can read more about the Retreat in this Bulletin.

The final touches are being made on our Harmony Week celebrations, which take place next week. The community at Lumen Christi College is wonderfully diverse, with students born in 50 different countries, and who speak 58 unique languages. Harmony Week gives us an opportunity to celebrate this diversity and learn more about our unique cultural stories in an effort to provide a greater sense of belonging for everyone. I very much look forward to the variety of activities that we have planned.

God bless.

College Principal

Year 12 Emmaus Retreat

The College’s annual Emmaus Retreat program began last week, with Year 12 students attending their final Retreat at the College.

The Year 12 Emmaus experience is a culmination of all the College Retreats and offers students a chance to reflect on their time at the College while looking towards their future. This year, the Year 12 group attended their Retreat at one of two venues; Fairbridge Village or Ern Halliday Recreation Camp.

Across three days the students were led through a range of activities and reflections by the College staff who had volunteered to accompany them on this final and meaningful Retreat experience.

A wonderful time was had by all who attended and many new and meaningful friendships were formed.

ACC Inclusive Sports Beach Carnival

On Friday, 8 March our ACC Inclusive Sports Team travelled to Floreat to take part in the annual ACC ISP Cricket Carnival. The day began with an 8am departure to Alderbury Reserve, where the students started the day with warmups and skills practice, led by WACA Staff. They then formed three teams – the Lumen Legends, Lumen Lights and Lumen/MLC Crickets, to rotate through a series of modified games. The scores were kept and tallied with all teams in an end of day play off.

The students remained enthusiastic, energetic, and committed to their teams. They were supported throughout the day by two Year 10 students; Evan Humphrey and Griffin Clarke. These students encouraged the Inclusive Team to give their best. We thank and appreciate Evan and Griffin’s commitment to the Cricket Carnival.

Mock Trial Competition

On Tuesday, 12 March the first round of the 2024 Mock Trial Competition was held at the Supreme Court of WA. Our two teams, Legally Lumen and Lumen and Order were both successful against the teams from St James Anglican School.

Final scores were:
Legally Lumen 130 v 120 Flat White Barristers, and
Lumen and Order 119 vs 104 Hipster Barristers.

A number of students from Year 11 and 12 returned from last year and did a fantastic job mentoring our new members who did well for their first case.

Year 7 Activity Day

Indigenous Cultural Program

On Friday, 1 March Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students participated in the first Indigenous Cultural Program class of 2024.

Students worked together with the Aboriginal Liaison Officer, discussing culture and languages in a yarning circle, later sharing words and meanings in their own language, learning about one another and where they are from.

Students who participated later visited the Indigenous Support Office during break time, to discuss language and add more words they had thought of to the poster.

“There was nothing but smiles and laughter during the class and I look forward to seeing more students being involved in the program. Woolah!” (a Nyoongar shout of praise/celebration)

Other guests included the Fremantle Dockers Head of Wellbeing, Angie Bain, and Fremantle players Josh Corbett and Aine Taigh.

Topics such as burnout and fatigue, building resilience, and also empowerment of women in the workforce were discussed and guests were given an insight into the successful strategies used by the presenters.

What Parents Need To Know About Online Gaming

In the realm of online activities, gaming ranks third among UK kids' favourite online activities, following YouTube and streaming. In USA, more than 90% of children older than 2 years play video games, Children 8 to 17 years of age spend an average of 1.5 to 2 hours daily playing video games. Though online gaming is a popular way for children and young people to relax, socialise and have fun, concerns keep increasing for parents.

Parents worry about the loss of interest in and focus on other activities, the influence of violent or mature content on young minds, and the financial strain from in-game purchases. Moreover, the addictive nature of gaming can lead to disrupted sleep pattern, resistance to school attendance, diminished academic performance and other mental health issues.

So are there any solutions? Here are some guidelines:

  • By setting boundaries, parents can alleviate worries and ensure healthier gaming habits.
  • Regular check-ins and discussions about online behaviour are crucial, as is monitoring the types of games your children are playing.
  • Encouraging a balance between screen time and physical activities is also key to promoting overall well-being.

Recipe of the Month

This week in Food, Science and Technology our Year 10 students made Calzone. A Calzone is an Italian folded pizza. The topic for our Year 10 course is ‘Foods Around the World’ which our students are very excited and keen to participate in. Being a multicultural school, often our students can assist the teacher in providing information and demonstrations of recipes customary to their culture. To make our calzone, we first made a basic flatbread dough using Greek yoghurt which we then filled with pizza ingredients before folding and frying in a frypan.

Each week we have as many as 450 students pass through our two food rooms, creating both basic and complex recipes. This week we also had our Year 7 students cooking quesadillas, our Year 8 students made ham and cheese omelettes, and our Year 9 students cooked a cinnamon bread and butter pudding scroll.

Would you like to have a go at making Calzones at home? Why not give it a try using our recipe:

Year 11 & 12 Drama Production Tickets on Sale Next Week!

Tickets to this year's Year 11 and 12 Drama Production of Dags go on sale next week!

DAGS is a touching coming of age story full of awkward moments we can all relate to, and speaks to the heart of teenage insecurity in an uplifting, sometimes quirky, way.

In this funny and compassionate look at adolescence, we meet Gillian. A sixteen year old ‘dag’ with a crush on the most popular boy at school and no hope of gaining his interest. Follow Gillian’s (often melodramatic) tale of overbearing sisters, school yard politics, first crushes, first kisses, friendship, and finding out who you are isn’t so bad after all- even if you are still a ‘dag’.

The Production will take place on Thursday, 18 April at 6:30pm in the College's Performing Arts Centre.

Tickets are $5 each, and will go on sale late next week. Keep an eye on our social media channels for the official ticket release.

Crochet Club Donations

The College will be submitting the annual data return relating to student addresses to the Commonwealth Government on 6 March. Information for parents/caregivers is contained in this link Privacy Collection Notice.

We would ask that all parents and caregivers review the address details contained on your 2024 fee statement and advise if there are any corrections required e.g.

if you live in an apartment/unit, is the unit number included and correct?
if you live on a sub-divided block is the letter of the street number correct i.e. 23, 23A, 23B etc?
for new and recently constructed properties, do you have the correct street address, not a plot number?

If your address details are correct, there is no action required. If details need to be updated, please email the changes to lumen@lumen.wa.edu.au.
